This summer is David Hockney’s 80th birthday so follow in his footsteps to Cartwright Hall and come see the brand new David Hockney Gallery. Birthday celebrations will take place at Cartwright Hall and outside in Lister Park, Bradford, on Sunday 9 July 1-4pm. There will be art, food, drink and live music for all, so put the date in your diary and join us to say “Happy Birthday Hockney”.
Bradford Literature Festival (30 June – 9 July) promises to be a wonderful whirlwind of literature, debate and entertainment for all ages. Incorporating 400 writers and 300 events across ten days. There will be a number of free family activities held in City Park, you will have the opportunity to voyage around the world’s folktales, fly into the stratosphere with superheroes, go on a teddy bears’ picnic and learn how to write your very own story. Harry Potter day will transport you into the magical world of witches and wizards, while Myths, Legends and Fairy Tales strand will transform City Park into an enchanting wonderland, taken over by dragons, princesses and Vikings.
The annual Oxenhope Straw Race is on Sunday 2 July, a variety of people donning bizarre and hilarious costumes whilst lugging a hay bale between the village’s pubs, chugging beer along the way, a great day out with a real carnival atmosphere!
Real Food Ilkley at South Hawksworth Street on Sunday 2 July (10am to 3pm) The open-air market celebrates the rich variety of locally produced food and drink.
Enjoy superb performances beamed live from the Royal Opera House to the City Park Big Screen. See Verdi’s most famous opera La Traviata live Tuesday 4 July at 7pm and Puccini’s final work, Turandot live on Friday 14 July at 7pm. Bring your friends and your picnics or take advantage of the bars and restaurants and watch world-class opera for free.

Our Hotpick! Field Work: Ten Years of Photography by Liza Dracup at the Impressions Gallery (7 July – 23 September 2017). Bradford born Liza Dracup is inspired by the landscape and natural history of the North of England. Field Work presents a decade of her work and marks Impressions’ tenth anniversary in Bradford. Inspired by historic methods and modern digital techniques, Dracup uses photography as an experimental tool to see beyond the human eye. Her resulting images range from vibrant ‘hidden’ landscapes to meticulously detailed studies of plants and animals.
Dinosaurs, volcanoes and Cybermen to transform city centre for the Bradford Science Festival in July. Bradford Science Festival will take place at the National Science and Media Museum, The Broadway and City Park – which will be transformed into an interactive laboratory. The festival kicks off with an adults only ‘Lates’ event at the museum on Friday July 14 before a weekend of family events on July 15 and 16.
Historic Shipley Glen Tramway will be hosting an open day on Saturday July 15. There will be free rides through the day, and refreshments. The tramway is the oldest funicular railway in the UK, and was built to transport people from Saltaire to Shipley Glen. It has been running since 1895.
Bingley Show (Saturday 22 July) is one of the North’s biggest one-day agricultural events, held in the picturesque settings of Myrtle Park. The show ground is filled with animals, handicrafts, country demonstrations & activities. The main ring provides a perfect setting to enjoy show jumping & The Bold Dog Freestyle Motocross Displays as well as other exciting attractions. Children’s fairground rides, a craft marquee & a unique shopping experience makes Bingley Show a perfect day out for the whole family!
Look out for the inaugural Bradford Print Fair which will take place as part of the North Parade Music and Arts Festival in Bradford, from original prints and affordable gifts, there is something for everyone. Join the North Parade street party for drinks, entertainment, food, music and Bradfordness. Also featuring The Made Bradford Market a selection of crafts stalls. (Saturday, 22 July)
