Living in the Natural World : Ben Snowden

The Bingley Gallery’s latest exhibition features Bradford-based contemporary artist Ben Snowden.

Ben is a relative newcomer to the local art scene but has fast built a reputation for his work which has been hung alongside such well-known alongside artists as; David Hockney, Frank Auerbach and Tracey Emin. More recently his art was selected as part of the ‘Made in Britain’ exhibition at The National Gallery of Poland in Gdansk.

His usual art materials are not those to be found in the average art supply shop, preferring instead to work with enamel, spray paint, graphite and household paints on materials, such as paper, board, card, textiles and wood, that he finds in everyday life. In the artist’s words ‘My work explores the relationships and ideas between subject and emotion, combining visceral energy with experience through painting. Inspired by the natural world, poetry and memory. I use the language of abstraction to create work that emphasises on mood and expression to determine the overall feeling of the paintings…… My main focus is to create work that evokes the senses and ultimately communicates a positive and constructive view of the world.

The exhibition marks another step towards post-lockdown trading for gallery owner David Starley. As he described,’ the gallery is still taking care to maintain social distancing, but more people are building up confidence to visit the gallery. Whilst we don’t feel ready yet for the evening previews that used to be a regular feature of our exhibitions, we’re delighted that Ben has agreed to be with us on Saturday 21st for a day long ‘meet the artist’ event where he will be available to discuss his methods and inspiration.

  • The exhibition will open on the 12thAugust 2021 and runs until 26 September.
