We’ve been looking for the People Who Make Bradford Sparkle – those people in our communities who have gone the extra mile to make us smile. We want to shine a spotlight on the individuals that have spread a sparkle of joy throughout the district this year.
In the first of our People Who Make Bradford Sparkle series, we’re delighted to introduce you to the staff of Rimmington’s Pharmacy in Bradford City Centre, nominated for their dedication to their customers throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, their good cheer and commitment to putting the community at the heart of everything they do.
Owners and pharmacists Qaisar Sheikh and Sajid Hussain have run the historic pharmacy for over ten years, restoring the shop to its former glory (Rimmington’s was established on the site in 1875 and has a fascinating history – take a look at the blue plaque outside the building to learn more about founder Felix Rimmington) and continuing to provide an outstanding, personalised service to their much-valued customers.
During the COVID-19 lockdown, Rimmington’s extended its services – delivering to all customers free of charge if needed, continuing to stay open even during bank holidays and for the first time ever opening on a Sunday. They have provided over 15,000 free masks to local people, run drop-in flu clinics and have applied to administer the COVID-19 vaccine. It’s these efforts above and beyond that have led to their nomination.
You definitely receive a warm welcome when you step through the door, greeted by smiles and Christmas jumpers. Sajid says that Rimmington’s staff are what makes the place sparkle. Giving people the time and space to chat and seek advice, continuing the spirit and ethos of a community pharmacy that’s been at the heart of its community for generations. As if on cue, one of the customers talking to a trainee pharmacist tells him – “you’ve been life savers, I don’t know what I would have done without you”.
Proud of the pharmacy’s history, a mural on the wall immediately attracts your attention and Sajid and Qaisar are usually on hand to tell you a story or two. Next time you’re in town, pop in for a browse, soak up the history of the place, the original apothecary cabinets are now filled with unique gifts and enjoy the beautiful Christmas window display.
Rimmington’s represents the best of Bradford’s past, present and future. Celebrating Bradford’s past through the stories of its founder and restoring the building and frontage, Rimmington’s is also investing in the future through its traineeships and work with Bradford University, contributing to its hardship fund and providing prizes for excellence in pharmaceutical studies.
The ‘People Who Make Bradford Sparkle’ campaign will run from December to February and will showcase the unsung heroes across the district, including those people who work in retail, tourism or hospitality.
