A must see double bill of Kathak and contemporary dance comes to Kala Sangam

I Illuminate Desolate (1)On Thursday 28 February at 7.30pm, Kala Sangam welcomes Rhythmosaic-Sengupta Dance Company for a double bill that showcases both the classical Indian dance style of Kathak and contemporary dance.

I Illuminate / Desolate is a must-see show, featuring two new pieces from acclaimed Indian Dancer Mitul Sengupta, exploring gender, identity and what it means to be free but live trapped.

A beacon of joy, happiness and positivity, I Illuminate is a traditional Kathak performance infused with neoclassical influences to tell the story of the light within millions of individuals – the light that knows no bounds.

A contemporary dance performance with its roots in Kathak and classical jazz technique, Desolate celebrates the voices of those who constantly find themselves interrogated by society.

Mitul Sengupta has worked extensively in India and internationally as both a dancer and choreographer. She teaches ballet, tap, jazz, classical Indian dance Kathak and contemporary dance at the Rhythmosaic Institute and Dance School in India.

Choreographer Ronnie Shambik Ghose said:

“The double bill showcases a blend of traditional and contemporary dance. The eastern, classical dance of I Illuminate compliment Bradford’s rich heritage, whereas Desolate enables audiences to see western dance forms in a new light.”

Following the performance there will be a post-show discussion with Kala Sangam’s Creative Director Alex Croft and Rhythmosaic-Sengupta Dance Company’s Artistic Director Mitul Sengupta, where audiences will have the opportunity to find out more about the performance and to ask any burning questions!

Kala Sangam – Bradford’s intercultural Arts Centre – is the perfect setting for audiences new to dance. This spring, Kala Sangam introduced a new ‘Pay What You Decide’ pricing structure for most events. Under the new system, tickets can be booked in advance as usual but audiences don’t pay until they have seen the show. This allows people to not only pay what they can afford, but also decide on a price based on their experiences of a show.

Don’t miss one of the dance highlights of the spring season at Kala Sangam – an inspirational performance by Rhythmosaic-Sengupta Dance Company. There are a limited number of tickets left, so secure your tickets now at www.kalasangam.org/i-illuminate or call 01274 303340.
