Women’s Work | Picturehouse Bradford

womenswork

A season of films where women write, direct or take the lead. At Picturehouse at National Science and Media Museum, Bradford until 26 September.

Women have always been great storytellers. Women’s Work, an eight-week, nationwide season across all Picturehouse Cinemas, politely reminds us that movie making isn’t just a man’s game and women are as at large now as they were then. Hand-picked by the cinephile programmers of Picturehouse, the selection reveres films from intriguing new names such as Chloé Zhao (The Rider), Jenny Lu (The Receptionist) and Deborah Haywood (Pin Cushion), and nods fondly to those who’ve paved the way such as award-winning actors Glenn Close (The Wife) and Joanna Scanlan (Pin Cushion).

Bradford Screening Listings:

Directed by Jenny Lu. Starring: Teresa Daley, Chen Shiang-chyi.
Unable to find a job, a Taiwanese graduate living in London, starts working at an illegal massage parlour as a receptionist. A powerful and award-winning exploration of dashed migrant dreams on Europe’s mean streets.

Eccentric single mother Lyn and her teenage daughter Iona move to a new town hoping to make a fresh start, but while Iona tries desperately to fit in with the cool clique at school, she distances herself from Lyn, whose hunchback and distinctive dress sense make her an easy target for mockery.

Tue 4 Sep, 6.30 – WOMEN OVER FIFTY FILM FESTIVAL PRESENTS… / Discover Tuesdays
Short films that amuse, astound and agitate, celebrating the work of older women on both sides of the camera. Specially selected by the Women Over Fifty Film Festival (WOFF).

Struggling to leave the sport he loves, Jandreau is the soulful presence at the heart of Zhao’s wonderful, sensitive and emotionally gripping drama, beautifully shot by cinematographer Joshua James Richards (God’s Own Country).
