Here’s our pick of events and things to do in Bradford & district this May 2018.

Did you know that May is National Walking Month? Now the evenings are lighter for longer, this makes it the perfect time to take a relaxing spring time walk with family and friends.  See the huge carpet of bluebells at Middleton Woods, Ilkley  & listen to glorious spring birdsong.  Pull on your walking boots – there are some great places to explore in the Bradford District.

Enjoy the great outdoors at Bingley Walking Festival on Monday, 7 May proudly hosted by Bingley Walkers are Welcome.  Visitors will have the choice of five free walks. The 1.5 mile Bingley Five Rise Locks family walk, led by Cedric Farineau, will leave from The Market Square, at 10am.

The Tour de Yorkshire 2018 route will see the riders tackle four stages through the best of the Yorkshire countryside including locations in the Bradford District.  Taking place between 3 – 6 May.  Stage 2 ( Friday 4th May) is the climb up to the Cow and Calf Rocks at Ilkley, and promises to be the most exciting stretch of this year’s Tour de Yorkshire.  Stage 4 (Sunday 6 May). The World-famous Haworth Main Street cobbles will feature in the fourth and final ‘Yorkshire Terrier’ stage, covering 189.5 kilometres from Halifax to Leeds.  The route locally will also feature Oxenhope, Oakworth and the Côte de Goose Eye.

Real Food Ilkley at South Hawksworth Street on Sunday May 6 (10am to 3pm) The open-air market celebrates the rich variety of locally produced food and drink.

Residents open their doors as part of Saltaire Arts Trail (5-7 May) Spring Bank Holiday weekend. Open Houses presents a diverse “Open Exhibition” of visual art in venues across the village. Showing work in the fields of painting, photography, printmaking, digital art, drawing & sculpture. Other attractions included a craft fair in Victoria Hall, photographic exhibitions in Salts Mill and various workshop & taster sessions.

Join Bradford Industrial Museum for May Day! At the Leeds & Bradford Steampunk Market. There will be family indoor and outdoor entertainment, a reading of the Time Machine, film screening of H.G. Wells First Men in the Moon, food stalls and much more. The Steampunk Market will run from the 5-7 May, with family activities alongside the market on the 7 May.

Whether you’re mad for The Muppets, bonkers about Bake Off or enjoy watching the Woolpack, it’s time to ditch the remote and celebrate the 2018 Ilkley Carnival (7 May) theme, TV programmes.  Come down and join in the fun on 7 May 2018, see you there!

The Bingley Canal Festival returns. Enjoy the colourful display of boats and the family friendly activities and entertainment. (19 May 2018)

We step into spring with a wonderful mix of shows at the Alhambra Theatre, the internationally acclaimed stage sensation ‘Jersey Boys’ is working its way back to Bradford! and  ’20th Century Boy’, hit musical inspired by the life of rock legend Marc Bolan, returns to the stage.

Cliffe Castle commemorates the centenary of the end of the First World War.  New Exhibition ‘Keighley’s War’ (14 May – 18 November) celebrates this important event and commemorates the contribution of those in the district whose lives were changed by world events.  From photos and medals to paintings and toys, this new exhibition takes visitors on a journey through our ancestor’s lives in the spectacular setting of Cliffe Castle.

Haworth 1940s Weekend (19&20 May) sees the streets of this picturesque village transported back seventy years. The costumes on display are superb from spivs to Bette Davis look-a-likes, all turned out with period details. Churchill makes an appearance to boost morale and you can jive and jitterbug the night away at the dance halls.  Times may have been hard in the forties but when the Union Jack flies high and the bunting flaps in the breeze, it’s impossible not to join in for another rousing Vera Lynn sing-a-long.

Woohoo! for two Bank Holidays in May, don’t let that free time go to waste.  The early May bank holiday weekend 2018 is positively packed with things to do. During spring bank holiday, enjoy some magnificent attractions and beautiful sights in Bradford and across the district.
